Killing of mother of five in Kamjong district triggers gunfire and arson; prohibitory orders imposed to contain unrest

GG News Bureau
Kamjong, 10th Oct: A woman was allegedly shot dead in Manipur’s Kamjong district, triggering fresh violence involving reports of gunfire and arson and prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders, officials said on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Domkhonei Touthang, a mother of five, was reportedly shot near the neck at around 9:40 pm on Friday in Chassad village, a Kuki-majority settlement in the Naga-dominated district. She died within minutes of sustaining the injuries, according to officials.

Violence reportedly intensified overnight, with gunfire continuing and several houses allegedly set ablaze. Firing and arson were still being reported in the latest updates. The extent of the damage and the number of houses affected had not been established immediately.

Prohibitory Orders Imposed
District authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 162 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) within a 400-metre radius of the Chassad police gate junction to prevent further escalation.

The restrictions prohibit the assembly of five or more people and will remain in force until further notice. Security personnel, magistrates on duty, essential-service personnel and individuals holding special permits have been exempted.

The District Magistrate has directed the Superintendent of Police to deploy adequate security personnel in the restricted area to maintain law and order.

Women’s Forum Demands Investigation
The Kuki-Zo Women’s Forum, Delhi and NCR, condemned Touthang’s killing and called for an impartial, time-bound investigation into the incident. The forum also sought accountability for those responsible and humanitarian, psychological and financial assistance for the bereaved family, particularly her five children.

Expressing concern over the safety of women and civilians amid the continuing conflict in Manipur, the organisation urged authorities to take steps to protect vulnerable residents.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over civilian security in the conflict-affected state, where fresh reports of violence have prompted local authorities to restrict public gatherings and strengthen security arrangements.
