New Delhi, 15th Oct: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday accepted the resignation of Dr. L. Murugan from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, following the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a Press Communiqué issued by the President’s Secretariat.

The resignation has been accepted under Clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India, formally ending Murugan’s tenure in the Union Council of Ministers.

Murugan, who served as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister on October 13. He also expressed his intention to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership.

In his resignation letter, Murugan said he wished to return to grassroots politics and work closely with party workers to strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. He indicated that he wanted to dedicate himself full-time to the party’s organisational work ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Murugan’s departure comes amid speculation about possible changes in the Union Cabinet. However, no official announcement confirming a wider Cabinet reshuffle has been made.

A former president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, Murugan joined the Union Council of Ministers in July 2021. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh in September 2021 and was re-elected in April 2024. His Upper House term was scheduled to continue until 2030.

His resignation marks another change among Ministers of State in the Union government, following the departures of George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu earlier this year.
