Budgam, 3rd Nov: The Aga Ruhullah resignation has dealt a major political blow to the National Conference (NC), with Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi announcing his departure from the party and submitting his resignation from the Lok Sabha during a public rally in Budgam on Tuesday.
Addressing a large gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park on the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, Ruhullah launched a sharp attack on NC president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Ruhullah accused the Abdullah family of betraying the expectations of the people and abandoning commitments made during the 2024 Assembly elections. He alleged that the party had failed to pursue its promises on the restoration of Article 370, the protection of constitutional rights, reservation policy and the release of prisoners.
Criticising Omar Abdullah’s approach towards the Centre, Ruhullah questioned the Chief Minister’s political conduct and accused him of compromising on the issues raised during the election campaign.
He said he could no longer remain associated with a party that, in his view, had moved away from its stated political commitments.
Ruhullah signed his resignation letter from the party at the rally and also emailed his resignation from the Srinagar parliamentary constituency to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The formal acceptance of his Lok Sabha resignation remains a separate parliamentary process.
The MP described his decision as a step towards freeing himself from the party and indicated that he wanted to bring together honest and committed young people to work for the rights and dignity of Jammu and Kashmir.
Ruhullah had been increasingly critical of the National Conference leadership over the party’s handling of reservation policy and its position on Article 370 since the 2024 Assembly elections. His differences with the party had become public over the past year.
His departure comes at a politically sensitive time for the ruling National Conference, which has also been facing internal dissent over leadership and recent Cabinet decisions.
