Guwahati, 22nd Aug: Assam has achieved a significant milestone in animal biotechnology with the birth of what Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described as the world’s first IVF female calf of the state’s indigenous Lakhimi cattle breed.
The calf was born at the Assam Veterinary and Fisheries University, marking a major development for the state’s livestock and dairy sector.
Sharing the achievement, Sarma said the breakthrough could open new avenues for preserving indigenous cattle breeds, improving disease control, increasing milk production and ultimately enhancing farmers’ incomes.
Calling the development a historic achievement for Assam, the Chief Minister described it as a convergence of the state’s civilisation, culture and scientific innovation.
Sarma congratulated the veterinary scientists and professionals involved in the project, saying their work had the potential to usher in a new era for Assam’s dairy sector.
He noted that although the calf itself may be small, its birth represents a significant achievement for biotechnology in Assam.
The use of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) technology in indigenous cattle breeding can support the conservation and multiplication of valuable breeds while enabling the faster propagation of desirable genetic traits.
The achievement is also expected to strengthen scientific interventions in livestock development and contribute to improving productivity and livelihoods in the dairy sector.
