Bombay HC Slams Maharashtra Govt for Inaction During Maratha Quota Protests

The Bombay High Court on Monday strongly criticized the Maharashtra government for its inaction during the ongoing Maratha quota protests. The court stated that the government cannot remain a “mute spectator” and has the responsibility to maintain law and order.

The hearing stemmed from a petition filed by Gunaratan Sadavarte against the protests led by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange. While Jarange’s lawyer initially assured the court of peaceful protests, reports emerged of violence across the state.

Responding to these reports, the court, comprised of Justices A S Gadkari and Shyam Chandak, remarked, “It is for the state to take care of the situation. The state cannot be a mute spectator. It has to remove blockades.”

The court further emphasized that the government does not require court orders to maintain control and that they must act to ensure peaceful protests.

Jarange’s lawyer, however, argued that these issues are political and should not be brought before the court. He also claimed that the protests were called off in January after assurances from the Chief Minister but resumed due to unmet demands.

The Bombay High Court has adjourned the matter for further hearing on March 5th.
