Raipur, 15th April: At least 10 people were killed and over 23 others injured in a powerful explosion at a power plant in Sakti district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, officials said.
The blast occurred in a boiler tube at a unit operated by Vedanta Limited in Singhitarai village during the afternoon, according to police.
Rescue Operations Underway
Local administration and police teams rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and launched rescue operations. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, while efforts continued to search for any trapped workers.
A spokesperson for the plant said the incident involved personnel from a subcontractor responsible for operations and maintenance.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical assistance for those affected,” the company said, adding that a detailed investigation has been initiated.
PM Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
An ex gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive ₹50,000.
State Government Response
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai termed the incident “extremely distressing” and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
He said the administration is ensuring proper treatment for the injured and assured a thorough investigation into the incident.
“Strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” the Chief Minister said.
