New Delhi, 20th April: The Election Commission of India has announced the implementation of ‘dry days’ in poll-bound states as part of measures to ensure free and fair elections during the 2026 Assembly polls and bye-elections.

Polling in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal (Phase-I) is scheduled for April 23, while Phase-II polling in West Bengal will be held on April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.

48-Hour Liquor Ban
Under Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the sale, distribution or serving of liquor will be prohibited for 48 hours prior to the conclusion of polling in each phase.

The restriction will also apply in case of any re-poll.

Counting Day Restrictions
The Commission has directed that May 4, the day of counting of votes, will also be observed as a dry day across all poll-bound states and Union Territories.

Strict Enforcement
No liquor shops, hotels, restaurants, clubs or establishments will be allowed to sell or serve alcohol during the notified period. This includes star hotels and licensed premises.

Authorities have also been instructed to strictly enforce rules on storage of liquor and prevent illegal stocking in unlicensed premises.

Ensuring Fair Polls
The ECI said the measures are aimed at maintaining law and order, preventing inducements and ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
