Govt Hikes MSP for All Rabi Crops
Safflower gets highest ₹675 per quintal increase; rapeseed-mustard MSP raised by ₹413 for Marketing Season 2027-28

New Delhi, 30th Sept: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved higher Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 Marketing Season.
The government said the increase is aimed at ensuring remunerative prices for farmers and encouraging crop diversification, particularly towards pulses and oilseeds.
Safflower sees highest MSP increase
The highest absolute increase has been announced for safflower, whose MSP has been raised by ₹675 per quintal from ₹6,540 to ₹7,215.
The MSP for rapeseed and mustard has been increased by ₹413 to ₹6,613 per quintal, while lentil (masur) has received an increase of ₹390, taking its MSP to ₹7,390.
For other Rabi crops, the MSP has been fixed at ₹5,958 for gram, ₹2,286 for barley and ₹2,610 for wheat.

MSP remains above 1.5 times production cost
According to the government, the revised MSPs are in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement to fix MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.
The expected margin over production cost is 106% for wheat, followed by 96% for rapeseed and mustard, 92% for lentil, 59% for gram, 58% for barley and 50% for safflower.
The government said the higher MSPs are also intended to encourage farmers to diversify beyond cereals towards pulses and oilseeds.
Rabi procurement rises
The government said wheat procurement during 2014-15 to 2025-26 increased to 3,715 lakh tonnes, compared with 2,254 lakh tonnes during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
Procurement of the six Rabi crops during 2014-15 to 2025-26 stood at 3,921 lakh tonnes, compared with 2,302 lakh tonnes in the earlier period.
The MSP amount paid to wheat-growing farmers during 2014-15 to 2025-26 increased to ₹7.31 lakh crore, compared with ₹2.56 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
For farmers growing the six Rabi crops, the MSP amount paid during 2014-15 to 2025-26 reached ₹8.36 lakh crore, compared with ₹2.65 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
