New Delhi, 22nd Oct: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday attended the inauguration and foundation-stone laying ceremony for Yamuna rejuvenation projects worth ₹8,941 crore in Delhi, announcing a target to clean the river by 2029.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were among the dignitaries present at the event. Shah said 10 projects had been inaugurated and work initiated on 33 others as part of the river-cleaning programme.
The projects include upgrades to existing sewage treatment plants (STPs), construction of new facilities, decentralised sewage pumping stations, sewer-line connections to households, sewer rehabilitation and drainage improvements. Shah said the initiatives would help treat wastewater before it enters the Yamuna and expressed confidence that the river would be cleaned before May 2029.
Shah said governments at the Centre and in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh had jointly prepared time-bound roadmaps to address pollution affecting the river. He attributed the problem to decades of untreated sewage and waste entering the Yamuna, while outlining the current government’s efforts to improve wastewater management.
The Home Minister also highlighted Delhi’s waste-removal efforts, stating that the Delhi government, with support from the Centre, had cleared 2.17 crore metric tonnes of garbage and reclaimed 100 acres of land. He said the city’s landfill sites at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur had seen reductions in their height.
During his address, Shah also criticised opposition parties over their allegations of electoral irregularities, including claims involving electronic voting machines and voter lists. He accused them of applying different standards to the Election Commission depending on election outcomes.
