India Endorses Global Call for 6G Leadership
DoT to lead India’s follow-up as over 20 countries back secure, resilient and interoperable next-generation networks

New Delhi, 9th Sept: India has endorsed the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining more than 20 like-minded governments in a shared commitment to developing open, interoperable, secure, resilient and resource-efficient next-generation communication networks.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 1–2, 2026, under the US G20 Presidency. The endorsement was marked by a handshake between Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
The initiative supports India’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in 6G. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India aims to contribute 10 per cent of global 6G standards and patents.
Union Minister for Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has emphasised India’s commitment to leading in 6G, while Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani has highlighted the country’s transition from a technology adopter to a standard-setter.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will take forward India’s engagement under the Call to Action and coordinate follow-up activities with relevant government agencies, industry, academia and other stakeholders.
The participating governments have committed to steps covering 6G security, interoperability, supply-chain resilience, research and development, cybersecurity and global standards. The roadmap includes identifying expert 6G points of contact within one month, engaging the telecom sector within three months, developing long-term strategies within six months and convening an in-person review in 2027.
The initiative also calls for cooperation in 6G research, secure and resilient 5G and 6G deployment, assessment of cybersecurity risks, supply-chain transparency and participation in standards development organisations.
India’s participation builds on its existing Bharat 6G Vision, Bharat 6G Alliance and indigenous 4G and 5G technology stack. The engagement will complement India’s ongoing work in international standardisation and spectrum forums while preserving its independent positions.
