New Delhi, 14th Aug: The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi has expressed concern over remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stating that India’s domestic political discourse should not be used as a reason to insult the democratically elected leader of another country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the embassy said it respects India’s democratic institutions and political debate but expects the same respect to be extended to Italy and its elected leadership.

The embassy noted that political differences are an integral part of democracy but stressed that India’s internal political matters should not become a pretext for mocking or disrespecting the Italian Prime Minister.

Reaffirming the bilateral relationship, the embassy said India and Italy share a long-standing friendship built on mutual respect, dignity and democratic values. It added that while political debate is welcome, disrespect towards Italy’s Prime Minister is inappropriate.

The diplomatic response came after remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during a public event, which triggered political debate and drew attention in both diplomatic and political circles.

The development has generated reactions across the political spectrum, with the embassy’s statement underscoring the importance of maintaining diplomatic courtesy and mutual respect between friendly nations, even amid domestic political disagreements.
