Lucknow, 3rd Oct: Fresh political speculation has emerged around Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president and Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary, with reports suggesting that discussions are underway over sending him to the Rajya Sabha through the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) quota.

Chaudhary is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh. He was elected in July 2022 with the support of the Samajwadi Party (SP), and his present term runs until 2028.

According to reports published on October 2, 2026, the possibility of Chaudhary resigning from his current Rajya Sabha seat and subsequently returning to the Upper House through the NDA quota is being discussed. However, no final decision has been announced by the NDA or the RLD.

The speculation comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, amid renewed political differences between the RLD and the SP. The RLD joined the BJP-led NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the SP and RLD’s earlier alliance has since ended.

Reports have also linked the discussion to the political significance of the RLD in western Uttar Pradesh. The party has traditionally maintained influence in parts of the region, making its position relevant to the political calculations ahead of the Assembly polls.

What is being discussed?
One reported possibility is that Chaudhary could relinquish his existing Rajya Sabha membership and seek election again with NDA support. Such a move would require the necessary constitutional and electoral procedures, and any vacancy created by a resignation would have to be dealt with separately.

RLD leaders quoted in reports have indicated that the matter is under discussion but that the final position has not yet been communicated. One report said a decision could become clearer after Chaudhary returns from abroad.

The speculation has also revived discussion about Chaudhary’s earlier political association with SP president Akhilesh Yadav. In 2022, when the two parties were allies in Uttar Pradesh, SP support enabled Chaudhary to enter the Rajya Sabha.

The latest reports, however, do not establish that Chaudhary has resigned or that the NDA has formally approved his re-election.

UP Rajya Sabha elections
The speculation is unfolding alongside the scheduled election for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh on October 16. That election concerns seats whose terms are ending and is separate from Chaudhary’s existing 2022-28 term.

For now, Chaudhary remains an RLD Rajya Sabha member with a term extending to 2028. Any change would require a formal announcement and the completion of the relevant parliamentary and electoral procedures.
