New Delhi, 21st May: A packet of Melody toffees gifted by Narendra Modi to Giorgia Meloni has triggered a massive online frenzy, sending searches and sales of the popular Indian candy soaring across the country.
The buzz began after Prime Minister Meloni shared a 12-second video on social media showing the gift she received from Modi during his Italy visit.
The video quickly went viral, with “Melodi” — a blend of Modi and Meloni — once again trending online.
Soon after the clip surfaced, Melody candies reportedly went out of stock on multiple quick-commerce platforms including Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart in several cities.
Blinkit confirmed on Instagram that it witnessed a sharp rise in searches for Melody on its platform.
Mayank Pravinchandra Shah, Vice President of Parle Products, said the development came as a pleasant surprise for the company.
“We are absolutely thrilled. It is a moment of immense pride for all of us at Parle Products,” Shah said.
He said the viral moment had significantly boosted visibility for Indian brands globally and described PM Modi’s gesture as a powerful endorsement of “Swadeshi brands” on the international stage.
Shah noted that Melody, one of India’s highest-selling toffee brands, is already available in more than 100 countries, largely catering to the Indian diaspora abroad.
Following the viral video, the company now aims to expand Melody’s reach among international consumers and strengthen its global market presence.
Parle Products also shared the video on Instagram with the caption: “Sweetening relationships since 1983.”
Interestingly, the online excitement also triggered confusion among investors, with shares of Parle Industries rising nearly five per cent on the stock market.
However, Parle Industries clarified that it is unrelated to Parle Products and does not manufacture Melody or confectionery products.
Shah also ruled out speculation about Parle Products pursuing a public listing, saying the company currently has no plans to enter the stock market.
The “Melodi” trend first gained popularity after Meloni posted a selfie video with Modi during the 2025 G7 Summit, captioning it “Hello from the Melodi team.”
Beyond the internet buzz, analysts say the viral moment also reflects growing strategic ties between India and Italy, which are deepening cooperation in trade, connectivity and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor initiative.
Bilateral trade between India and Italy has crossed $16.77 billion in recent years.
