Modi Cabinet Extends PM-KISAN Till 2031
Government approves five-year continuation of farmer income support scheme; beneficiaries to continue receiving Rs 6,000 annually

New Delhi, 31st July: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total financial outlay of Rs 3.15 lakh crore.
Under the scheme, eligible landholding farmer families will continue to receive financial assistance of Rs 6,000 annually, transferred directly into their bank accounts in three equal instalments through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The government said the five-year extension is aimed at providing timely income support to farmers, enabling them to invest in agricultural inputs and strengthen their livelihoods.
Launched in February 2019, PM-KISAN uses Aadhaar authentication, digital beneficiary verification and DBT to transfer financial assistance directly to eligible farmers.
According to the government, more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts through 23 instalments since the scheme’s launch.
More than 9.49 crore farmers received over Rs 18,984 crore under the 23rd instalment.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government said more than Rs 1.71 lakh crore was disbursed to farmers through the scheme.
Women farmers have received more than Rs 1.06 lakh crore under PM-KISAN, with women accounting for nearly one in every four beneficiaries.
The Centre said PM-KISAN assistance has enabled farmers to make timely investments in seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, agricultural machinery and other farming requirements.
Citing an evaluation by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office of NITI Aayog, the government said more than 92 per cent of beneficiaries reported using the assistance for agricultural activities and investment.
Around 85 per cent of beneficiaries reported improvement in agricultural income and reduced dependence on informal credit, according to the evaluation cited by the government.
The Centre also said that between 2020-21 and 2025-26, the area under foodgrain cultivation increased by around 9.65 per cent, productivity rose by approximately 10.53 per cent, while total foodgrain production increased by about 21.18 per cent.
The government said Aadhaar-based authentication and digital verification would remain central to PM-KISAN, allowing benefits to be transferred directly to eligible farmers without intermediaries.
The Centre said the continued implementation of the scheme would help farmers increase agricultural investment, improve productivity, manage farming risks and strengthen the rural economy.
The government described PM-KISAN as a key pillar of its farmer-centric policies and said its continuation would support the broader goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
