New Delhi, 18th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday apologised to the women of the country after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to secure the required majority in the Lok Sabha, calling it a “deeply disappointing moment” for the nation.
In an address to the nation, the Prime Minister said despite the government’s “best efforts,” the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act could not be passed, and sought forgiveness from “mothers, sisters and daughters” across the country.
Modi sharply criticised opposition parties including Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party, accusing them of putting political interests above national interest and blocking a long-pending reform.
He alleged that these parties celebrated the bill’s failure, calling it an “insult to women’s dignity and aspirations.”
The Prime Minister said the amendment aimed to ensure women’s representation from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and described it as a crucial step towards empowering half the population.
“This was not about taking away anything from anyone, but about giving rightful representation to women,” he said.
Despite the setback, Modi asserted that the government’s commitment to women’s reservation remains firm.
“Today we may not have secured the required numbers, but we have the support of 100% of the country’s women,” he said, adding that efforts to pass the legislation will continue.
The Prime Minister also dismissed concerns raised over delimitation, stating that no state’s representation would be reduced and all regions would benefit proportionately.
Positioning the issue as a larger ideological battle, Modi accused the Opposition of consistently opposing reforms and spreading misinformation.
He said the government will “remove every obstacle” in the path of women’s empowerment and bring the bill again.
