Kolkata, 9th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday bowed before the people of West Bengal in a symbolic gesture of gratitude after the BJP formed its first-ever government in the state.
The emotional moment came during the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata.
Standing on a red-carpeted podium alongside Adhikari and members of the newly formed cabinet, PM Modi first waved at cheering supporters before slowly kneeling down and bowing with his hands placed firmly on the ground.
The gesture was seen as a mark of respect and thanks to Bengal voters for delivering a historic mandate to the BJP.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present at the ceremony, underlining the political significance of the BJP’s breakthrough in the state.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari and five cabinet ministers days after the BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.
Diverse Representation in New Cabinet
The BJP appeared to have focused on social representation while forming its first cabinet in Bengal.
Among the ministers, Dilip Ghosh represents the OBC community, Agnimitra Paul belongs to the Kayastha community, Ashok Kirtania represents the Matua community, while Kshudiram Tudu and Nishit Pramanik represent tribal and Rajbanshi communities respectively.
Party leaders said the ministers had played an active role in strengthening the BJP’s organisational base in Bengal and contributing to the campaign that ultimately brought the party to power.
Political observers described the presence of both PM Modi and Amit Shah at the oath-taking ceremony as a sign of the importance the BJP attaches to its victory in West Bengal, a state long considered politically difficult terrain for the party.
