New Delhi, 25th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the inscription of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh on the UNESCO World Heritage List, describing it as a proud moment for every Indian and a recognition of the country’s rich civilisational and spiritual heritage.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was delighted that the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath had received the prestigious global recognition.
Calling Sarnath one of the most revered sites associated with Lord Buddha, Modi said the sacred place continues to inspire people across the world with the Buddha’s timeless message of wisdom, compassion and harmony.
“This recognition celebrates India’s profound civilisational and spiritual heritage,” the Prime Minister said.
He also expressed confidence that the UNESCO recognition would encourage more people from around the world to visit Sarnath and connect with the teachings and ideals of Lord Buddha.
Sarnath was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea, becoming India’s 45th World Heritage Property.
The ancient site, located near Varanasi, is regarded as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dharmachakra Pravartana) after attaining enlightenment, marking the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and one of the most significant events in Buddhist history.
