New Delhi, 1st July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the death of acclaimed theatre director, actor and filmmaker Vijaya Mehta, describing her as one of the towering personalities of Indian culture and cinema whose work transformed modern Marathi theatre. Mehta passed away at her Mumbai residence on Tuesday night following prolonged age-related illness. She was 91.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Vijaya Mehta would be remembered as a pioneer of modern Marathi theatre, known for her creativity and unwavering commitment to artistic excellence.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Vijaya Mehta Ji. She will be remembered as one of the towering personalities of culture and cinema. A pioneer of modern Marathi theatre, she was known for her creativity and commitment to artistic excellence. Her work inspired generations of actors, directors and theatre lovers,” Modi said.

He also expressed condolences to her family, admirers and the entire artistic fraternity, saying his thoughts were with them during the hour of grief.

Widely regarded as one of the architects of India’s experimental theatre movement, Vijaya Mehta played a defining role in shaping modern Marathi theatre through her innovative productions and direction. Her work also extended to parallel cinema, where she earned critical acclaim as an actor and filmmaker.

Following the news of her demise, tributes poured in from across the theatre and film fraternity, with several actors, directors and former students remembering her as a visionary mentor whose contributions elevated Indian performing arts and inspired generations of artists.
