New Delhi, 21st Oct: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the passing of Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj, remembering his role in crafting the historic Sengol presented to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

In a condolence message, PM Modi said Ethiraj, who belonged to a distinguished family from Tamil Nadu, would be remembered for his contribution to an object deeply connected with India’s traditions and national history.

The Prime Minister recalled meeting Ethiraj in 2023, when the Sengol was installed in the new Parliament building and given a place of honour. PM Modi said he had the opportunity to thank the craftsman for his contribution to the country and its cultural heritage.

“His life and craftsmanship represent a remarkable connection between India’s glorious traditions and our national journey,” PM Modi said, extending his heartfelt condolences to Ethiraj’s family and admirers.

The Sengol, a ceremonial sceptre, was presented to Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947. It was installed in the new Parliament building in 2023 as part of the inauguration ceremony, bringing renewed public attention to its historical and cultural significance.

Ethiraj’s craftsmanship linked a traditional Indian art form with an important moment in the country’s modern history. His work on the Sengol became a lasting part of the object’s legacy and its association with India’s journey from colonial rule to independence.

PM Modi’s message was shared in both English and Tamil, reflecting the craftsman’s roots in Tamil Nadu and his contribution to the country’s cultural heritage.

The Prime Minister concluded his message by conveying condolences to the bereaved family and those who admired Ethiraj’s work, saying, “Om Shanti.”
