New Delhi, 31st July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received a telephone call from newly appointed United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham, with the two leaders agreeing to take the India-UK relationship to new heights by expanding cooperation across strategic and economic sectors.
During the conversation, PM Modi warmly congratulated Burnham on assuming office and conveyed his best wishes for a successful tenure.
The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a focus on expanding cooperation in technology, innovation, defence, security, clean energy, education and people-to-people ties.
The proposed cooperation will be pursued in line with the India-UK Vision 2035, according to an official statement.
Modi and Burnham also welcomed the recent entry into force of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fully harnessing the agreement’s trade and investment potential to generate greater prosperity and economic opportunities for people in both countries.
The trade agreement is expected to form a key pillar of the broader economic relationship between New Delhi and London as the two sides seek to deepen commercial and investment ties.
The leaders identified technology and innovation among the priority areas for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Defence and security, clean energy and education were also discussed as important components of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Both sides further emphasised strengthening people-to-people ties between India and the United Kingdom.
During the telephone conversation, the two Prime Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Modi and Burnham agreed to remain in touch as the two governments work towards strengthening bilateral cooperation and implementing the objectives laid out under the India-UK Vision 2035.
