President Murmu Calls for Viksit Bharat
In Independence Day eve address, President highlights inclusive development, national unity and India's journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047

New Delhi, 15th Aug: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday called upon every citizen to contribute towards building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, saying India’s 80th year of Independence marks a renewed commitment to inclusive development, constitutional values and national unity. The address was delivered on the eve of the country’s 80th Independence Day.
Extending her greetings to Indians across the world, the President said the Tricolour symbolises the nation’s freedom and collective aspirations. She noted that every section of society—from students, teachers, farmers and healthcare workers to scientists, entrepreneurs, sportspersons, civil servants and members of the armed forces—is contributing to India’s progress.
Recalling the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle, President Murmu paid homage to the nation’s freedom fighters and remembered the victims of Partition on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. She also paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for integrating more than 550 princely states into the Indian Union after Independence.
The President said India is moving steadily towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, with the principle of Antyodaya ensuring that the benefits of development reach every citizen. She highlighted the country’s progress in poverty alleviation, financial inclusion, healthcare and food security, citing the expansion of Jan Dhan accounts, Ayushman Bharat and free food grain distribution programmes.
Highlighting India’s digital transformation, President Murmu said the country has built one of the world’s largest digital public infrastructures, with digital payments becoming common across urban and rural India. She added that rapid expansion of highways, railways, waterways and airports has strengthened connectivity, generated employment and boosted investor confidence.
On the economy, the President said India continues to remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite global uncertainties. She noted that the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative has strengthened both economic resilience and national security while India’s foreign policy continues to be guided by peace, cooperation, dialogue and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
President Murmu also stressed the importance of protecting the environment for future generations, urging citizens to actively participate in initiatives such as Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement.
Speaking about women’s empowerment, she said women are making remarkable progress across sectors including education, agriculture, defence, entrepreneurship and sports. She highlighted the achievements of Lakhpati Didi and said the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam would further strengthen women’s participation in governance.
Describing India’s youth as its greatest asset, the President said young innovators, entrepreneurs and scientists are driving the country’s future. She also underlined the need for transparent and secure public examinations, stating that reforms are being undertaken to eliminate unfair practices and enhance trust in the examination system.
Referring to national security, President Murmu recalled the success of Operation Sindoor, saying it demonstrated the precision and capability of India’s armed forces and conveyed a firm message against terrorism. She also described the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan as a decision taken in the national interest and said India’s progress towards becoming Naxal-free reflects the success of security measures combined with inclusive development.
The President concluded by urging citizens to strengthen the spirit of patriotism through collective action and public participation, saying that the development and well-being of every Indian remain the ultimate objective of building a Viksit Bharat.
