New Delhi, 28th May: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday presented the ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ to the Sikkim Police in Gangtok and called for a more citizen-friendly and accountable policing system in the country.

Addressing the ceremony, the President congratulated serving and former officers and personnel of the Sikkim Police for receiving the honour and praised the force for maintaining peace, security and justice in the state since its establishment in 1897.

Murmu said India’s policing system still carries traces of the colonial era when the primary objective of police forces was to control citizens rather than serve them.

She stressed the need to completely move away from this colonial mindset and said police forces must work in cooperation with citizens to help achieve the goal of a developed India.

The President underlined that transparency and accountability are essential in the policing system and said police institutions must become more accessible and citizen-friendly so that ordinary people can raise grievances without fear.

She also emphasised the importance of adopting a sensitive approach towards women, children and vulnerable sections of society.

“The police must evolve into partners and guides for the citizens,” Murmu said, adding that stronger trust between police and the public would improve social security and reinforce respect for the rule of law.

The President said the role of police should go beyond arresting criminals and should focus on building a secure, socially conscious and responsible society.

She also appreciated the professional conduct and public-friendly approach of Sikkim Police, stating that the force has earned the trust and respect of the people of the state through its service and commitment.
