New Delhi, 20th May: Droupadi Murmu, President of India, on Wednesday urged IAS officers of the 2024 batch to combine compassion with rationality and uphold integrity, transparency and fairness while serving the public.
A group of Indian Administrative Service officers from the 2024 batch, currently serving as Assistant Secretaries in various Union ministries and departments, called on the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Addressing the officers, President Murmu said the IAS and other All India Services have played a major role in India’s development and that expectations from civil servants have increased as the country moves towards higher growth and governance standards.
She said young officers would get opportunities to work across diverse sectors and often lead teams of experts in specialised areas, requiring rapid learning and adaptability.
The President stressed that neutrality reflects fairness, while sensitivity demonstrates commitment to inclusivity.
She said credibility is built through transparency and sustained performance, while integrity provides the moral courage needed to act decisively in public interest.
“Officers have to blend compassion with rationality. They have to be sensitive without being sentimental,” she said.
President Murmu also underlined that ethics and governance are interconnected and advised officers to remain honest and ethical while ensuring effective delivery of results.
She said delays in administrative decision-making deprive citizens of their legitimate interests, similar to delays in justice delivery.
The President noted that democratic governance requires officers to give due importance to issues raised by elected representatives in the interest of the public.
She further advised officers to keep the welfare of citizens, particularly marginalised communities, at the centre of governance and policymaking.
Murmu expressed confidence that the officers would contribute significantly towards building a developed and inclusive India under the vision of Viksit Bharat.
