Chandigarh, 23rd June: The Punjab unit of the Congress has entered a crucial phase of internal churn, with state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring facing mounting pressure from party leaders even as he attempts to consolidate his position ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Warring’s camp has drawn confidence from the emergence of close aide Shubham Devgan as a prominent contender in the Punjab Youth Congress elections. Party insiders view Devgan’s performance as evidence of Warring’s continued influence over the organisation, particularly among younger workers, and as a sign that the current leadership remains capable of building a new generation of Congress leaders.

However, the perception of organisational strength has been challenged by the party’s poor performance in the Gidderbaha civic body elections, where Congress managed to win only two of the 19 municipal wards. The Aam Aadmi Party secured the remaining 17 seats, triggering criticism from within the Congress and raising questions over the effectiveness of the current leadership.

Several senior leaders, including Pargat Singh, Partap Singh Bajwa and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, have intensified their criticism of the state leadership. They have argued that the party requires immediate course correction and organisational restructuring to remain electorally relevant in Punjab.

Despite the setbacks, Congress leaders have continued to demonstrate influence in their respective regions. Channi strengthened his position in the Chamkaur Sahib assembly segment, where the party won 10 of the 15 wards in the Morinda Municipal Council elections. Similarly, senior leader Rana Gurjit Singh maintained his political hold in Kapurthala, where Congress candidates secured victory in 31 of the 50 municipal wards.

Amid growing factionalism, the Congress high command has initiated consultations to assess the situation in Punjab. Party observers have been tasked with gathering feedback from grassroots workers, while meetings have been held with legislators and Members of Parliament from the state before any decision on leadership is taken.

According to party sources, the leadership is also considering caste and community equations before finalising its strategy. Names being discussed for a possible leadership role include Charanjit Singh Channi, Vijay Inder Singla, Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Pargat Singh.

The developments reflect a widening divide within the Punjab Congress. While Warring’s supporters are advocating organisational continuity and a youth-focused revival strategy, rival factions are pressing for leadership changes to strengthen the party’s prospects ahead of the next Assembly election.
