New Delhi, 11th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, describing him as a towering figure whose work transformed Tamil cinema and left an enduring impact on Indian filmmaking.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the legendary director, saying his portrayal of rural life and village culture brought authenticity and a new cinematic language to the screen.

“The passing of Thiru Bharathiraja Ji is very saddening. He was a towering figure of the cinema world whose works transformed Tamil cinema. Particularly noteworthy was his portrayal of rural life. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” Modi said.

Bharathiraja, regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai after age-related health complications. He was 84.

Widely credited with taking Tamil cinema out of studio settings and into real village landscapes, Bharathiraja revolutionised storytelling with films rooted in rural life, social realities and strong emotional narratives. His breakthrough film 16 Vayathinile is considered a landmark in Indian cinema and helped redefine the industry’s visual and narrative style.

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Bharathiraja directed several acclaimed films including Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai and Karuthamma. He received numerous honours, including the Padma Shri and multiple National Film Awards for his contribution to Indian cinema.

Tributes have poured in from political leaders, actors, filmmakers and fans across the country, with many describing his death as the end of an era in Tamil cinema.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the film industry, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that Bharathiraja will be accorded state honours during his final rites.
