Bhopal, 22nd May: Samarth Singh, the husband of Twisha Sharma, was arrested on Friday after remaining absconding for 10 days following his wife’s death at their home in Bhopal.

Twisha, 33, was found hanging at her residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12.

While the case was initially treated as a suspected suicide, allegations of dowry harassment, mental abuse and interference in investigation later intensified the controversy.

Samarth Singh, a lawyer, was taken into custody after appearing before a court in Jabalpur to surrender hours after withdrawing his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The court directed him to surrender before a Bhopal court, following which police personnel present at the premises detained him.

According to reports, Samarth attempted to conceal his identity by wearing a mask, sunglasses, cap and covering part of his face with cloth while entering the court premises.

Twisha’s family has accused Samarth and his mother Giribala Singh of subjecting her to dowry harassment and repeated humiliation after marriage.

Family members also alleged lapses in the investigation and refused to accept custody of Twisha’s body earlier, demanding a second autopsy.

Friends and relatives of Twisha have claimed she repeatedly expressed feeling trapped in an unhappy marriage and spoke about mental harassment by her husband and in-laws.

The Singh family, however, alleged that Twisha was depressed and accused her of consuming narcotics, claims that police later said were unsupported by evidence.

Giribala Singh sparked outrage after publicly making disparaging remarks about her late daughter-in-law and questioning her character.

Twisha’s brother Harshit Sharma, an Army Major, strongly criticised the comments and described the environment in the house as “suffocating”.

He alleged that Twisha’s integrity and even the legitimacy of her unborn child were questioned by her husband and mother-in-law.

In a major legal development, the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday allowed a second post-mortem examination of Twisha’s body.

The court directed that the autopsy be conducted in Bhopal by a medical team from All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi.

Twisha’s family had raised concerns over discrepancies in the first autopsy report, including alleged omissions regarding injuries found on her body and inconsistencies in recorded height details.

Meanwhile, police have also moved the High Court seeking cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail.

Investigators argued that the sessions court had failed to fully consider WhatsApp conversations between Twisha and her parents, which allegedly contained “crystal clear allegations” against both accused.

Police further alleged that Giribala Singh attempted to tamper with evidence and influence the investigation, violating conditions attached to her anticipatory bail.

The case has triggered widespread debate over dowry harassment, domestic abuse and the handling of sensitive investigations involving influential individuals.
