Chandigarh, 2nd Oct: Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday met former party president Rahul Gandhi and formally submitted his resignation as the chief of the Punjab Congress, ending his more than four-year tenure at the helm of the state unit.
Warring’s resignation comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections due early next year and amid longstanding differences within the state Congress. The party had recently replaced its Punjab AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel with Sachin Pilot. Baghel had spent several weeks in Punjab attempting to address differences between competing factions.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Gandhi, Warring confirmed that he had formally submitted his resignation and said Gandhi sought an assessment of the political situation in Punjab, including the functioning of the state government and the challenges facing the Congress.
Warring said he discussed with Gandhi the party’s challenges as well as its strengths and how it should respond to the political situation in the state.
He also thanked Gandhi for giving him the opportunity to lead the Punjab Congress during what he described as difficult circumstances.
Warring said he had assured Gandhi that he remained ready to serve the party whenever required.
Former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla is among the names being discussed for the state Congress president’s post. Singla is also an AICC co-treasurer and oversees the party’s properties.
