Mumbai, 18th Jan.
15 new cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected this week, Mumbai city officials said on Wednesday. These cases were identified through whole genome sequencing (WGS) of 19 swab samples, with four cases found outside of the city.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the 15 patients in Mumbai who tested positive for the JN.1 sub-variant experienced mild symptoms, and four of them had other health conditions and required hospitalization. However, all of these patients have since recovered.

The JN.1 sub-variant has been classified as a ‘variant of interest’ (VoI) by the World Health Organization due to its rapid spread. However, it is considered to pose a ‘low’ global public health risk.

Out of 11,966 swab samples tested between December 1, 2023, and January 15, 2024, a total of 537 samples were positive for COVID-19, as reported by the BMC.
