Kurnool, 16th April: At least eight people were killed and 10–12 others injured after a vehicle carrying pilgrims collided with a tanker in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh early Thursday, police said.
The accident occurred on National Highway 167, around 8–9 kilometres from the Dharmapur toll plaza, near the Karnataka–Andhra Pradesh border.
According to police, a pickup vehicle carrying devotees to Mantralayam collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
A total of 21 people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The impact of the collision was severe, killing eight people on the spot, including five women, a three-year-old girl and two men.
All the victims have been identified as pilgrims from Karnataka.
The injured were initially taken to nearby hospitals. Seven critically injured persons were later shifted to Kurnool for advanced treatment, while others continue to receive care locally.
Officials said one of the injured is in stable condition.
Police and emergency teams rushed to the site soon after receiving information and carried out rescue operations. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
Authorities said the tanker was travelling from Bidar towards Tumakuru, while the pilgrims were headed for darshan.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
