New Delhi, 26th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condemned the shooting incident at an event attended by US President Donald Trump in Washington, asserting that violence has no place in any democracy.

In a post on X, PM Modi said he was relieved to know that President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were safe following the security breach.

“Relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident at a Washington DC hotel. I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being. Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned,” PM Modi said.

The incident took place during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington on Saturday night when gunshots were heard near the venue, triggering panic and a swift evacuation of senior US leadership.

President Trump later confirmed that an armed individual charged a security checkpoint carrying multiple weapons before being neutralised by Secret Service personnel.

According to Trump, the suspect fired at a Secret Service agent, whose bulletproof vest prevented serious injury. The suspect was arrested and is believed to have acted alone.

The high-profile event, attended by senior members of the US administration, was cancelled following the security scare.
