Mansa, 21st Oct: A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reached Mansa late Tuesday night and took over the investigation into the alleged murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota from the local police.

The development came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Jhota’s family during his visit to Punjab. The CBI is expected to begin its investigation on Wednesday, following the transfer of the case to the central agency.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann handed over the investigation to the CBI shortly before Shah’s visit, amid demands from Jhota’s family and political leaders for an independent probe.

Jhota had emerged as a vocal figure against drug abuse and trafficking in the Mansa region. His alleged murder sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of people who oppose the local drug trade.

The case has also become a point of political confrontation between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and opposition parties. The BJP has repeatedly criticised the Punjab government over the drug problem, accusing it of failing to dismantle trafficking networks despite its anti-drug campaign.

Shah’s meeting with Jhota’s family brought their demand for justice into sharper focus and added to calls for an impartial investigation. The CBI’s takeover is expected to bring the case under central agency scrutiny as questions continue over the circumstances surrounding the activist’s death.

The investigation will now seek to establish the circumstances of Jhota’s death and determine responsibility for the alleged murder.
