Kolkata, 14th May: Mamata Banerjee faced fresh controversy on Wednesday after the Bar Council of India sought details regarding her legal enrolment and practice status following her appearance at the Calcutta High Court.
In a letter sent to the State Bar Council of West Bengal, the Bar Council of India asked officials to furnish information related to Banerjee’s enrolment, practice status, suspension, if any, and resumption of practice.
The letter noted that Banerjee served as Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2011 to 2026 and sought factual verification regarding her eligibility to practise law during and after holding constitutional office.
The State Bar Council has been asked to submit details within two days, including her enrolment number, date of registration, current status on the rolls, and whether she had informed the council about suspension or cessation of practice during her tenure as Chief Minister.
Officials have also been asked to clarify whether any Certificate of Practice exists in her favour and whether it is currently active, suspended, or otherwise.
The development came hours after Banerjee appeared before a bench of Justices Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen in connection with alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal following the May 4 election results.
Banerjee urged the court to intervene and stop violence allegedly targeting women and members of minority communities across the state.
As she exited the court premises, slogans of “chor, chor” were raised against her by a section of lawyers and onlookers. Banerjee later alleged that she was “assaulted” during the incident.
Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee claimed that lawyers influenced by the BJP attempted to heckle the former Chief Minister inside the court complex.
Banerjee holds degrees in Islamic History, Education, and Law. Under Indian legal rules, advocates must be enrolled with a State Bar Council or the Bar Council of India to practise law.
