Lakhimpur Kheri, 18th May: At least 13 people were killed in two separate road accidents in Uttar Pradesh, including nine deaths in a truck-van collision in Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday morning, officials said.
According to police, the accident took place near Sisaia on National Highway 730 under the Isanagar police station area when a speeding truck collided head-on with a passenger van.
Officials said the impact of the crash was so severe that the van was completely mangled.
Around 10 passengers were reportedly travelling in the van at the time of the accident. Nine people died on the spot, while one seriously injured survivor was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Local residents said the van was travelling from Lakhimpur towards Sisaia, while the truck was approaching from the Bahraich side when the collision occurred.
Villagers and passers-by alerted police and assisted rescue operations before emergency teams arrived at the scene.
Authorities later recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examinations. The identities of the victims were being verified.
In a separate incident late Sunday night in Bahraich, four people were killed and two critically injured after a speeding car crashed into a combine harvester machine near Digha More in the Brahmnipura area.
Officials said the car was travelling from Nepal towards Bahraich when it rammed into the harvesting machine.
Police teams rescued the occupants trapped inside the vehicle and shifted the injured to hospital in critical condition.
D. P. Tiwari said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examination and the victims’ families had been informed.
“Further legal proceedings are underway,” he said.
Police have launched investigations into both accidents to determine the exact cause of the crashes.
