Ferozepur, 6th June: At least eight people, including a 13-year-old girl, were killed and nine others injured in a tragic road accident on the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred near Janga Wala Mod close to Husain Shah village when a pickup tempo carrying around 20 family members collided head-on with a trolley traveller, locally known as a “ghoda”, coming from the opposite direction.

The victims were travelling from Jalalabad to Harike Pattan to immerse the ashes of a deceased family member, Puro Bai. The family had left Jalalabad around 4 am and was headed to the pilgrimage site, located nearly 105 kilometres away.

According to officials, the collision took place around 5 am. The impact was so severe that four occupants of the pickup tempo died on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

Among the deceased were Ram Singh, son of Puro Bai, Mahinder Singh, a 13-year-old girl, and several other relatives travelling in the vehicle.

Nine injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals, while some critically injured victims were later referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for advanced treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh, who visited the accident site, described the incident as deeply unfortunate.

“It is very sad. Some of the injured have been referred to Faridkot for treatment, while post-mortem examinations of the deceased are underway. Prima facie, the trolley traveller appears to be at fault. Appropriate legal action will be taken against its driver after investigation,” he said.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident and are examining all circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sources said the pickup tempo involved in the accident was primarily a goods vehicle used for transporting fruits, vegetables and other merchandise. However, police have not officially commented on whether overloading may have contributed to the tragedy.

Local residents claimed that Janga Wala Mod is a dangerous blind curve where several accidents have occurred in the past. Villagers have renewed demands for improved road safety measures on the accident-prone stretch to prevent similar incidents in the future.
