New Delhi, 27th June: OpenAI has appointed former Uber India President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, marking a major leadership move as the artificial intelligence company accelerates its expansion in one of its fastest-growing global markets.

Singh, who will join the company in September, will be OpenAI’s most senior executive in India, overseeing consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall operations. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.

The appointment comes as OpenAI strengthens its presence in India through increased engagement with businesses, developers and policymakers. The company opened its first India office in New Delhi in November 2025, with Chief Executive Sam Altman repeatedly identifying India as a key market for AI adoption and innovation.

Singh brings more than a decade of leadership experience from Uber, where he spent 11 years, including the last six as President for India and South Asia. He led the ride-hailing company’s operations across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, driving growth in one of the world’s largest mobility markets.

An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh previously worked at McKinsey & Company as an Associate Partner before joining Uber in 2015. He was honoured with IIM Ahmedabad’s Young Alumni Achiever’s Award in 2022.

Uber confirmed Singh’s departure on Friday, thanking him for his decade-long contribution and wishing him success in his new leadership role.

Industry observers view Singh’s appointment as a significant step in OpenAI’s India strategy, as global AI firms intensify investments to tap the country’s growing developer community, expanding enterprise demand and rapidly evolving artificial intelligence ecosystem.
