YOGYAKARTA (Indonesia), 8th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, where he and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto jointly inaugurated an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-led conservation and restoration project.
The two leaders unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the commencement of the restoration work, reaffirming their commitment to preserving the shared cultural and civilisational heritage of India and Indonesia.
Built in the 9th century, the Prambanan Temple Complex is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex, dedicated to the Trimurti—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The restoration project follows an understanding reached during President Prabowo’s visit to India in 2025.
The government said India has a strong record of conserving heritage sites across Southeast Asia, with the ASI having earlier undertaken extensive documentation of the Borobudur Temple Compounds in Indonesia.
The initiative reflects India’s continued commitment to preserving shared cultural heritage and deepening its civilisational partnership with Indonesia.
