Bhubaneswar, 9th July: Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday said scientific capability is foundational for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and urged young scientists to use science and innovation for nation-building while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and social responsibility.
Addressing the 15th Graduation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar, the Vice President described the institution as a symbol of India’s aspirations in science, innovation and intellectual leadership. He said institutions dedicated to fundamental sciences play a vital role in strengthening the knowledge economy, technological advancement, national security and sustainable development.
Highlighting the challenges posed by climate change, emerging diseases, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced materials, Shri Radhakrishnan said science must not only generate knowledge but also guide policymaking and ensure sustainable development. He stressed that scientific capability is essential for India’s developmental aspirations.
The Vice President called for greater interdisciplinary collaboration, saying modern challenges cannot be solved within the boundaries of a single discipline. He encouraged graduating students to nurture curiosity, embrace challenges and use their knowledge for the larger good of society.
Referring to India’s achievements in space exploration, vaccine development, digital public infrastructure and renewable energy, Shri Radhakrishnan said the country is emerging as a global leader in science and innovation. He urged graduates to balance ambition with responsibility and ensure their work benefits society.
Paying tribute to Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the architect of India’s nuclear programme, the Vice President recalled that his untimely demise was a major setback for the country’s atomic research. However, he said India emerged stronger and has today become one of the world’s leading nations in atomic research. He expressed hope that many NISER graduates would follow Dr. Bhabha’s path and make significant contributions to India’s scientific and technological progress.
The ceremony was attended by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, senior scientists, faculty members, students and distinguished guests.
