Coimbatore, 22nd July: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday inaugurated the GKNM Group College of Nursing in Coimbatore and called for strengthening India’s healthcare ecosystem through a skilled, compassionate and service-oriented workforce to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said quality healthcare and education are the twin pillars of a healthy and developed nation. He stressed that India’s progress towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 would require collective efforts to improve healthcare delivery, promote preventive healthcare and nurture dedicated healthcare professionals.
Commending the G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Charitable Trust, Radhakrishnan said the institution has made significant contributions to healthcare and education over the decades. He noted that its 50-bed hospital, established in 1952, has grown into a 750-bed multi-specialty hospital while expanding its educational initiatives.
Highlighting the role of nurses, the Vice-President said they are much more than caregivers, as their compassion and concern contribute significantly to the healing process. He urged nursing students to uphold the values of self-confidence, dedication, courage and empathy in serving patients.
Referring to the transformation in India’s healthcare sector, Radhakrishnan said the Ayushman Bharat programme has expanded access to quality healthcare, with nearly 44 crore people receiving health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. He also highlighted healthcare initiatives for senior citizens and the ongoing digitisation of health services.
The Vice-President emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare, calling for efforts to eliminate anaemia among women and children, improve maternal health and nutrition, and promote healthier lifestyles. He also appealed for greater public awareness about organ and eye donation, describing them as life-saving acts of generosity.
Expressing confidence in the newly inaugurated institution, Radhakrishnan said it would produce competent and compassionate healthcare professionals who would contribute to nation-building. He also hoped that the G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Charitable Trust would establish a medical college in the future to train skilled doctors committed to serving society.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, R. Gopinath, President of the Kuppuswamy Naidu Charity Trust for Education and Medical Relief, and other dignitaries attended the event.
