New Delhi, 26th Aug: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Manipur in the first week of October and lay the foundation stone of the proposed Senapati Medical College, besides reviewing other development projects in the state, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat said on Wednesday.
The proposed visit was finalised during a meeting between Shah and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi. According to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Shah assured the Chief Minister that the Central government would work towards fulfilling the aspirations and wishes of the people of Manipur.
The state Cabinet had recently decided to establish the medical college in Senapati district, which has a predominantly Naga population. The project is expected to expand healthcare infrastructure and access to medical education in the hill district.
During the meeting, Shah also appreciated the state government for resuming the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service and ensuring free movement along National Highway-2.
The October visit will be Shah’s first visit to Manipur since April 2024. He had earlier undertaken a four-day visit to the state from May 29 to June 1, 2023, following the outbreak of ethnic violence.
Manipur has remained politically and socially sensitive since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, while efforts continue towards restoring normalcy and strengthening connectivity.
The proposed visit also comes amid a renewed debate in Manipur over demands for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census, with political representatives and civil society groups raising the issue with the Centre.
The Centre and state government are also focusing on restoring transportation and development activity. The resumed bus service and movement along NH-2 have been highlighted as steps towards improving connectivity across communities.
