Chandigarh influencer abducted, set on fire in Morinda, dies after weeks in hospital

Chandigarh, 29th August : A shocking crime has rocked Chandigarh and Morinda after 28-year-old social media influencer Manjeet Kaur died from severe burns at PGIMER hospital, weeks after being abducted, tied to a tree, and set on fire by two acquaintances. Police have now registered a case of kidnapping and murder against two suspects, Shubhi and Pinda, following a complaint by Manjeet’s mother.

According to the FIR, Shubhi and Pinda called Manjeet late at night on July 3, asking her to meet near a liquor shop in Chandigarh’s Sector 34. When she arrived, they allegedly forced her into a car and drove her to Morinda, where she was assaulted, tied to a mulberry tree, and set ablaze. A local acquaintance who saw her on fire rushed to douse the flames with a blanket and took her to a hospital. She was later moved to Mohali and then to PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Manjeet remained unconscious for several weeks before briefly regaining consciousness on August 5, when she recounted the ordeal to her family. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries on August 26.

Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping, murder, and joint criminal liability. Inspector Shadi Lal of Sector 34 Police Station said Manjeet, a divorcee, is survived by her seven-year-old son. She was reportedly in a live-in relationship with one of the suspects.

Police teams are conducting raids to locate and arrest Shubhi and Pinda. Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage from Chandigarh to Morinda to piece together the suspects’ movements, while family members and friends are being questioned for further leads.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate over women’s safety in India, with calls for swift justice and stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence.
