WASHINGTON – US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a sweeping new sanctions package which is aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine.
Kremlin said on Thursday that more sanctions by the US against Russia would make it harder to reach a peace deal in Ukraine.
The Bill was sent to US President Donald Trump to sign into law, media reported.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “We are, of course, monitoring the progress of this document”
He added,”It falls under the category of unfriendly actions, and of couse the imposition of any additional sanctions by the US would certainly complicate efforts to find a peace settlement in Ukraine.”
US-mediated efforts to mark an end to the Ukraine war have been stalled for months now.
Trump sent two envoys to Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to get the process moving again.
US sanctions bill targets Russia’s energy and defence industries.
It is aimed at Moscow’s “shadow fleet” of tankers that evade existing sanctions, in order to deprive the country of revenues to finance the war with Ukraine, which has been going on for more than four years now.
