Bhagwat Warns Against Ego at Ujjain Youth Event
RSS chief says arrogance creates an illusion of control; advocates duty, conduct and respect for diverse forms of worship

Ujjain, 19th Sept: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday cautioned against ego and arrogance, saying a person driven by ahankar may develop the belief that everything is under their control and should happen according to their wishes.
Bhagwat was addressing young participants at the Yuva Dharma Sansad in Ujjain, a day before Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled Chhatron Ki Goonj event in neighbouring Indore. Bhagwat did not name Gandhi or any other political leader in his remarks.
Speaking about dharma, Bhagwat said it should not be regarded as something reserved for old age. Referring to the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana, he said the principles of dharma remain relevant throughout life and guide human conduct and responsibilities.
He described dharma through duties such as putra dharma, raj dharma and manav dharma, saying it determines responsibilities according to one’s nature and circumstances. He emphasised that dharma lies in conduct rather than merely in lectures or books.
Bhagwat also spoke about religious tolerance. He said people should remain committed to the form of worship suited to their own tradition while respecting other forms of worship as well. He added that people should not seek to convert others and should remain steadfast in their own traditions.
His comments on ego came as he cautioned against the belief that human beings can determine everything according to their own will. He said such a belief reflects an inflated sense of control and urged young people to understand their responsibilities within a broader framework of dharma.
The Ujjain event brought together young participants to discuss the concept and contemporary relevance of dharma. Bhagwat’s remarks also included a distinction between dharma and the Western concept of religion, with the RSS chief describing dharma as a broader framework centred on conduct, responsibility and collective well-being.
