Arusha, 7th Oct: The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, continued its participation in the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, on October 6, with members taking part in discussions on health, democracy, human rights, peace, artificial intelligence and counter-terrorism.
During the Assembly, Harivansh exercised the Right of Reply to remarks made by Pakistan on Kashmir. He stated that Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India and that Pakistan has no locus-standi to comment on India’s internal affairs.
The 153rd IPU Assembly is being held in Arusha from October 5 to 9, with parliamentarians from around the world deliberating on the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”
Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, Lok Sabha MP and member of the IPU Committee on Health, participated in sessions of the committee and also accompanied it on a field visit.
Anurag Singh Thakur, Lok Sabha MP, participated in the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights. He also took part in the debate on the draft resolution titled “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities.”
Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Lok Sabha MP, attended the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security and participated in the debate on “Shaping peaceful futures: Parliamentary diplomacy, mediation and dialogue for lasting peace.”
Focus on AI, peace and counter-terrorism
Dr. Sasmit Patra, Rajya Sabha MP, participated in a panel discussion on the role of parliaments in securing peace in the age of military artificial intelligence.
Patra also joined the deliberations of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights and contributed to the drafting of the resolution on inclusive social development and empowerment of people living with disabilities.
N.K. Premachandran, Lok Sabha MP, participated in a workshop on strengthening parliamentary responses to terrorism, focusing on the introduction of the IPU reference framework.
He also attended a workshop on critical minerals for shared prosperity and strengthening parliamentary oversight.
The IPU’s official programme includes dedicated sessions on military AI, terrorism, critical minerals and parliamentary strategies on disability rights, reflecting the broad range of issues under discussion at the Assembly. Inter-Parliamentary Union
Indian diaspora interaction in Tanzania
In the evening, the Indian High Commission hosted a cultural programme in honour of the Indian Parliamentary Delegation.
Following the programme, members of the delegation interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Tanzania, providing an opportunity to engage with the Indian community during their visit.
The Indian delegation’s participation follows its engagements on the opening day of the Assembly, when members attended meetings of various IPU bodies and held bilateral discussions with parliamentary leaders from Australia and Tanzania.
