Kolkata, 8th May: Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said the incoming BJP government in West Bengal would fulfil every promise made in the party’s election manifesto and work closely with the Centre to meet the aspirations of the people.
Addressing newly elected BJP legislators after being chosen as the leader of the BJP legislature party, Adhikari said Bengal was entering a new political phase marked by “trust” instead of fear.
“Fear is out and, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has said, trust is in,” Adhikari said amid loud cheers from party MLAs and supporters.
Earlier in the day, Adhikari was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior BJP leaders, formally paving the way for him to become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal.
“The people of Bengal have given us a historic mandate. We will fulfil all the promises made in the BJP’s poll manifesto in Bengal,” Adhikari said.
He also stressed the importance of coordination between the Union government and the new BJP administration in the state.
“Let the Centre and the state work together to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bengal,” he added.
Amit Shah formally announced Adhikari’s election after the BJP legislature party meeting in Kolkata.
The Home Minister said eight proposals were received for the post of legislature party leader, all carrying only Adhikari’s name.
“Enough time was given for a second name, but no other proposal came. Therefore, I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the Chief Minister of West Bengal,” Shah said.
Adhikari, regarded as one of the principal architects of the BJP’s rise in Bengal, is scheduled to take oath as the state’s ninth Chief Minister at a grand ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday morning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
The BJP’s decisive election victory ended the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state and marked the party’s first ascent to power in Bengal.
