Amravati, 20th April: A minor girl, one of the victims in a sexual exploitation case in Maharashtra’s Amravati district, attempted suicide on Monday but was rescued in time by police near Vazhar Dam, officials said.

The girl is among eight victims allegedly targeted by Mohammad Ayaz, also known as Tanveer, who has been arrested along with several others in the case.

According to police, the accused lured young girls through social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Snapchat, recorded obscene videos, and later used them for blackmail and coercion.

Investigators said the victims were allegedly forced into exploitation under threats.

Police are examining whether the minor’s suicide attempt is directly linked to the ongoing case. Officials said she is safe and receiving support.

The case has expanded with additional complaints. A fresh FIR has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against another accused, Uzair Khan, following allegations of stalking.

Statements of victims, including minors, have been recorded as part of the investigation.

Authorities have arrested eight suspects so far and seized multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones, a laptop and storage devices, which are being analysed for evidence.

The case has drawn political attention, with leaders seeking updates from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the probe.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on evidence and statements.
