Chandigarh, 8th May: The political confrontation between the BJP and the Punjab government intensified on Thursday after BJP leaders sought registration of an FIR against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over his remarks linking recent explosions in the state to political motives ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
A BJP delegation led by Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar met senior police officials in Chandigarh and submitted a formal complaint demanding legal action against the Chief Minister.
The delegation alleged that Mann made “false, inflammatory and defamatory” statements during a public address on Wednesday in which he purportedly linked the BJP to twin explosions near the BSF Frontier Headquarters in Jalandhar and an Army camp in Amritsar.
According to the BJP, the remarks were “baseless and unsubstantiated” and had the potential to create public unrest, communal tension and political hostility in the sensitive border state.
Jakhar said the delegation intended to meet Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, but in his absence submitted the complaint to Special DGP A. S. Rai.
The complaint alleged that the Chief Minister attempted to divert attention from the actual perpetrators by publicly assigning political motives before completion of the investigation.
The BJP further accused Mann of making statements that could undermine confidence in investigative agencies and disturb social harmony by allegedly linking the incidents to possible acts of religious desecration.
The party has sought registration of a case under provisions related to promoting enmity, public mischief, criminal defamation and acts prejudicial to national integration.
The controversy comes amid heightened concerns over law and order and security in Punjab following the recent low-intensity blasts in Jalandhar and Amritsar.
Earlier, Mann had alleged that the BJP spreads fear and violence in states where it seeks electoral gains, remarks that triggered sharp reactions from both BJP and Congress leaders.
