Indore, 20th Sept: BJP leaders have criticised Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi following a stage act at the Congress-led ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event in Indore on Saturday, where comedian Pulkit Mani appeared to mimic Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A video from the event showed Mani imitating Modi’s mannerisms and references to the Prime Minister’s interactions with foreign leaders. Gandhi was seen participating in the exchange and laughing, prompting criticism from BJP leaders.
BJP national spokesperson C.R. Kesavan accused Gandhi of endorsing remarks that he said mocked an elderly woman and criticised the tone of the performance. He also linked the episode to what he described as the Congress’s difficulties in connecting with young voters.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi also criticised Gandhi, alleging that the event was used to mock and insult Prime Minister Modi’s late mother. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami similarly condemned the episode, saying political discourse should maintain dignity.
At the event, Gandhi also criticised the government’s diplomatic approach while discussing India’s foreign policy. He argued that the Prime Minister’s role was to protect the country’s interests rather than treat international relations merely as personal friendships.
The Indore programme, centred on the theme “system versus students,” also saw Gandhi accuse the existing system of discouraging students from asking questions. He raised issues including unemployment, examination irregularities and the functioning of educational institutions.
The BJP’s criticism has added another political controversy around the student outreach event, which also featured Gandhi’s broader attacks on the Modi government and its policies.
