New Delhi, 5th Nov: The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that it is setting up a special committee to re-examine the UGC equity regulations, 2026, whose implementation was stayed by the court in January.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant that the government was examining ways to address students’ concerns and ensure that no group feels excluded, threatened or apprehensive under the proposed framework.

The Chief Justice stressed that the review must protect the interests of all students. He said the concerns and well-being of the younger generation should remain at the centre of the exercise.

The Supreme Court had earlier stayed the implementation of the 2026 regulations, observing that certain provisions appeared prima facie vague and could be misused.

Until the matter is considered further, the court had directed that the UGC’s 2012 equity regulations would remain in force.

The proposed committee is expected to re-examine the framework in light of the concerns raised before the court, with the broader objective of ensuring fairness and protection for students across higher education institutions.
