Congress Names Three Candidates for Maharashtra MLC Polls
Abhijit Wanjari and Jayant Asagaonkar renominated; Aditi Pohare gets Amravati Teachers’ seat

Mumbai, 3rd Oct: The Congress has announced three candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections from the Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies, renominating sitting MLCs Abhijit Wanjari and Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar and fielding professor Aditi Rishikesh Pohare from Amravati.
Wanjari will contest from the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency, while Asagaonkar will seek another term from the Pune Division Teachers’ constituency. Pohare has been selected for the Amravati Division Teachers’ constituency.
The elections are being held for five Legislative Council seats—three Graduates’ and two Teachers’ constituencies. Polling is scheduled for October 23, with counting on October 27. The last date for filing nominations is October 6, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 9.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT), had earlier indicated that its constituents would coordinate for the biennial polls. Discussions have involved the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’, Pune Graduates’ and Amravati Teachers’ constituencies.
The terms of the five sitting members—Satish Chavan from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’, Arun Lad from Pune Graduates’, Abhijit Wanjari from Nagpur Graduates’, Kiran Sarnaik from Amravati Teachers’ and Jayant Asagaonkar from Pune Teachers’—are due to end on December 6, 2026.
The announcement comes as parties prepare for the October 23 contest, with the nomination process now underway.
