New Delhi, 6th Sept: A building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, with several people feared trapped under the debris. The Delhi Fire Service received an alert around 1:30 pm and immediately deployed rescue teams to the site.
The building, reportedly used as a paying guest accommodation, is located in an area with a large student population near Delhi University’s South Campus. Initial reports indicated that several students may have been inside when the structure collapsed.
Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service and police are working to locate and evacuate people trapped under the rubble. The National Disaster Response Force and other agencies have also joined the rescue operation, according to reports.
At least two to three people had been reported rescued in initial updates, though figures varied as the operation continued. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of people trapped or the extent of injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing cries for help from beneath the debris. Locals also joined rescue efforts while emergency personnel brought in equipment to remove concrete slabs and other debris.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said rescue operations were being carried out on a war footing and that the situation was being closely monitored by the authorities. The cause of the collapse has not yet been established.
